i crane my neck to see into the crevasse,
hands white from holding the edge for so long.
the sun upon me like a vulture,
pints of sweat, reddened skin, body never so strong,
but now hardened.

in the depth, the deafened darkness,
one forgets the sun's unforgiving light;
and i'm not a believer in heaven,
but in the sky above the tree line,
i swear i saw it once or twice.
